Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like standard physical horror, but inside Together exists a profound meditation about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story begins when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple confront the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. At their core, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
